The first Mortal Kombat title to use 3D graphics and the last to release in arcades, Mortal Kombat 4’s increased realism sparked a new wave of controversy.
While the game generally received fairly high review scores, fans were left divided following the series’ new direction. Shao Kahn was gone, instead replaced by the fallen Elder God Shinnok; players could also now use their environment to their advantage. In addition to interactables, each player also had their own weapon.
Midway chose to reduce its comicality and return the series to its darker, more serious tone, removing Babalities, Friendships, Animalities and Brutalities.
