Mortal Kombat 1 Kombatants (So Far)

The Elder Gods over at NetherRealm Studios have dropped a gameplay trailer for the next Mortal Kombat game, with some YouTube content creators also given the opportunity to play a minimal build of the game.

This is a collection of all the kombatants we have seen or have been referenced in all of this content, as well as some information dropped by Ed Boon himself at the Summer Game Fest via GameSpot.

    Gameplay Video Reveals

So, let’s just get the obvious list here out of the way. We know for sure the playable characters in Mortal Kombat 1 will be Liu Kang, Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Johnny Cage, Kitana, Mileena, Kung Lao, Raiden, Kenshi and Shang Tsung. The characters that have been chosen for the secondary lineup of Kameo fighters we now know will contain Scorpion, Sub Zero, Sonya Blade, Kano, Jax, Goro, Kung Lao and Stryker.

Hints, Name Drops, and Other Hearsay

This is where the speculation starts to kick in, as it pertains to other characters we have not seen concrete proof of yet. Intro dialogue for Kitana between her and Liu Kang name drops Jade. That could be an easter egg for the fans, or it could be an implication of her showing up in-game.

Kuai Liang is name dropped specifically in an intro dialogue between Kenshi and Liu Kang. We know that the main version of Sub-Zero in this game is likely to be Bi-Han, as he is called by that name by Liu Kang. This seems to imply three distinct possibilities. First being that Scorpion (confirmed to be brothers with Sub-Zero) is in fact Kuai Liang and not Hanzo Hasashi. The second possibility is that through the course of the story the Bi-Han/Kuai Liang switch happens, which would then imply Noob Saibot’s existence in the game. Or the third possibility being that Kuai Liang shows up in the story to some degree, but is not in fact a playable character this time around.

The final possible character inclusion on the main roster is Sonya Blade. In an interview with GameSpot Ed Boon was talking about early ideas for what eventually became the Kameo system. In this recollection he referred to “a drone for Sonya.” This very well could be just shooting around ideas early on in the process, but anything is possible at this stage.

In another interview via YouTuber Brian Tong Boon said something similar, though this time he also included a similar idea for Kung Lao (which seems to lend something to the idea of Sonya in Mortal Kombat 1).

For Kameo fighters, there is really only one we don’t get in the main gameplay trailer, and that is Johnny Cage. This information was given when the announcement was made that Jean-Claude Van Damme would be lending his likeness (and voice as confirmed by Ed Boon) to Mortal Kombat for the first time. FINALLY!

    Is that all?

In conclusion, the anticipation for the upcoming Mortal Kombat game continues to grow as more information and hints about characters are revealed. Mortal Kombat 1 is shaping up to be an exhilarating installment in the beloved franchise, and gamers are eagerly awaiting its release to experience the intense battles and Fatalities that have made the series legendary.

Dustin has been a fan of Mortal Kombat since the very first “Toasty” Fatality he saw on an MK1 machine in ’92. That moment made him an instant lore-hound as well, devouring each new game and its story. Today he runs a YouTube channel, Generally Nerdy, is a tech director for Black Lion Endeavors Corporation, and is all around nerdy kind of guy with a love of metal music, fighting and FPS games, photography and food.
