Take this with a grain of sand

May looks to be a promising month for Mortal Kombat fans as momentum builds for the franchise’s twelfth instalment.

It’s been four years since NetherRealm Studios gave us Mortal Kombat 11, an incredible addition to the franchise that pushed the envelope and took fighting games to a whole new level. One year later the studio released its Aftermath expansion, further extending its expansive Story mode and giving us two tantalising possible endings.

Kronika, the Keeper of Time, was introduced in Mortal Kombat 11 as an all-powerful Titan who had the ability to alter and bend time to her will through the use of a mystical hourglass. During the course of the game’s story things go awry, as the course of history is changed and multiple timelines converge. It resulted in some interesting story arcs, including the retconning of Sindel. But let’s not get into that.

Earlier this morning the official Mortal Kombat YouTube channel released a video showcasing a number of staff from NetherRealm Studios thanking the wider kommunity for an incredible 30 years. As the video draws to a close, we are greeted by Ed Boon who also shares his gratitude.

Thank you Mortal Kombat fans for thirty years of amazing support. And uh…we’re not quite done yet.

The clip then cuts away, focusing in on a pile of sand before panning up to the underside of what looks like Kronika’s hourglass. As the last few grains of sand fall, the camera zooms up on a single grain, which promptly explodes into multiple fragments.

While there are multiple theories circulating the internet, one can draw immediate comparison to the Big Bang Theory, humankind’s best guess as to how the universe formed. Are we about to see a full reboot of the series or the introduction of a multiverse? Perhaps we will return to the beginning of time where we can follow the journey of the Great Kung Lao. Either way, it’s an exciting time to be a Mortal Kombat fan!

Keep it locked to Kamidogu as we await further news regarding the future of Mortal Kombat.
