In June, filming of Mortal Kombat 2 will commence, and followers of the gaming franchise will witness a number of classic characters gracing the movie’s sequel.
As per a new report by That Hashtag Show, four new antagonists – Baraka, Shao Kahn, Sindel, and Quan Chi – will be the new featured villains in the upcoming film. Furthermore, Kitana and King Jerrod are also expected to make an appearance. We here at Kamidogu have not been able to verify any of these tall tales, so grain of salt in hand let’s take a look at this.
However, if the report is for real, the appearance of Shao Kahn would make a lot of sense given his importance in the series. Initially featured in the 1993 video game Mortal Kombat 2 as the game’s final adversary, Shao Kahn – the emperor of Outworld – is a menacing and daunting villain who has reappeared in several other Mortal Kombat games since then. Consequently, with Goro’s demise at the end of the previous Mortal Kombat film, it appears logical for the movie’s creators to introduce another powerful villain to take his place.
As for King Jerrod and Sindel, this would seemingly imply that WB is either planning on moving into the story that feeds directly into game number three, or they are preparing for such events.
Notwithstanding, Johnny Cage’s role in Mortal Kombat 2 remains a mystery despite That Hashtag Show’s account. However, it is reasonable to assume that he will play a significant part in the movie sequel. Johnny Cage was a crucial character in the 1995 Mortal Kombat movie, but was conspicuously absent from the reboot. Nevertheless, the ending of the film indicates that Liu Kang will recruit Johnny Cage for the Mortal Kombat competition in the sequel, although the identity of the actor who will play Cage remains unknown.
Quan Chi is an interesting choice, as he is revealed to be the reason for the rift between Sub-Zero and Scorpion in the expanded mythology of the original timeline as well as the reboot timeline. Quan Chi factors heavily into many sub-plots throughout the entirety of Mortal Kombat’s mythology, as well as one of the main antagonists in the story for the Deadly Alliance game.
Regrettably, there has been no news regarding Sub-Zero’s return in Mortal Kombat 2. Although the villain perished at the end of the previous film, actor Joe Taslim is committed to several sequels, and aficionados of the video games are cognizant that the character Bi-Han eventually returns as Noob Saibot. Taslim has hinted that he is well-versed in this aspect of the character’s history, so it is feasible that he may reprise his role. Consequently, fans must wait and see how the story unfolds!
