The future of Mortal Kombat 1 could be in shambles, if rumours started by a prominent leaker are to be believed.
Known leaker _FateUnknown_ recently made a post on Reddit claiming that NetherRealm Studios have pulled the plug on both Kombat Pack 3 and a second story expansion for Mortal Kombat 1. The decision is said to have been made following lacklustre sales of Khaos Reigns, the game’s first expansion released back on September 24.
Flanked by controversy, the Khaos Reigns expansion saw the introduction of an expanded story focusing heavily around antagonist Titan Havik. Fans as a whole remain polarised by the departure of many character and story elements that have existed for 30 years, not to mention the gender-swapping of both Cyrax and Sektor. Those points aside, the inclusion of Ghostface, Conan the Barbarian and T-1000 had fans scratching their heads considering the vast pool of classic characters that could make a return (not to mention this is the first Mortal Kombat title without any new playable characters whatsoever). The price of the expansion also raised eyebrows, with many lambasting it as a shameful money grab.
Mortal Kombat 1 has had a rocky ride since its launch last year; fans unimpressed with the Kameo system, Invasions mode and general lack of single player content. While the title has improved significantly since then, it remains too little too late for many within the kommunity.
What are your thoughts on this rumour? Do you think it has any credibility? Are you hopeful that Mortal Kombat 1 continues to be supported for years to come, or are you ready for an entirely new title?
