With little news on the horizon since filming wrapped up earlier this year, the highly anticipated sequel to the 2021 reboot has finally been given a release date.
First announced in January 2022, Mortal Kombat 2 is set to release in IMAX theatres in North America on October 24, 2025. Written by Jeremy Slater (best known for his work on the Disney+ Marvel series “Moon Knight”), the sequel will also see its director Simon McQuoid return to the helm in pursuit of a Flawless Victory.
Hiroyuki Sanada, Chin Han, Joe Taslim, Jessica McNamee, Lewis Tan, Tadanobu Asano, Josh Lawson, Mehcad Brooks, Ludi Lin and Max Huang are all set to make a triumphant return. Newcomers Adeline Rudolph (Kitana), Karl Urban (Johnny Cage), Damon Herriman (Quan Chi), Tati Gabrielle (Jade), Martyn Ford (Shao Kahn), Ana Thu Nyugen (Sindel), Desmond Chiam (King Jerrod) and CJ. Bloomfield (Baraka) are most certainly set to light this sequel on fire, with a solid backing from series co-creator Ed Boon a promising sign of things to come.
Heavily affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, the first movie still managed to gross over $84 million worldwide. With a larger budget and more careful approach to respecting the series’ 30+ year history, Mortal Kombat 2 is currently on track to become the greatest Mortal Kombat movie we have yet to see.
