The Banished trailer brought joy to many fans. Now, it’s time to find out how our beloved characters have changed!
Per tradition, the Mortal Kombat 1 official Twitter page shared the official biographies of the recently revealed characters, Havik, Ashrah, and Reptile. Check them out:
Havik
Of the three, Havik is the one whose backstory changed the most. Previously a Cleric of Chaos from Chaosrealm, he’s now a rebel from Seido. “Seido,” for those not so knowledgeable of the Mortal Kombat lore, is Orderrealm’s official name. Judging by the information we got here, it’s safe to assume that, in Liu Kang’s New Era, those two distinct realms don’t exist… yet.
It could very well be that Havik’s goal to “destroy Seido’s regime and replace it with an anarchist utopia” is precisely what will create this distinction between the Realms of Order and Chaos.
It’s certainly an interesting new approach that gives more weight to how the realms function. Hopefully, we’ll get to see Seido’s two facets in Mortal Kombat 1!
Ashrah
Her bio is the most conservative – and that was a wise decision! Ashrah already had a fantastic background, and all NetherRealm needed was to spice it up with additional details as well as rework some pieces that wouldn’t fit the New Era. For example: the Brotherhood of Shadows doesn’t exist in this timeline, so Ashrah would’ve never been a part of Quan Chi’s clan.
Despite the similarities, there are a few intriguing points that caught my attention. First, her bio says that she left the Netherrealm before she found the Kriss, meaning she’s no longer trapped there. With Shinnok and Quan Chi “gone,” I assume the Netherrealm might be a less… strict place, even though it maintains its status as a realm of suffering. Like before, Ashrah is hunted down by her sister demons, and she kills them here as well. While it’s not 100% guaranteed, chances are this debunks the theory that Kia, Jataaka, and Sareena were Ashrah’s sisters. At least I hope so!
If you know Ashrah’s previous storyline (if you don’t, you can read the article I wrote about her!), you probably remember that the Kriss wasn’t a holy blade. This was a disguise used by the Datusha, a bloodthirsty demon that deceives its wielder into believing they’re doing something good.
“Ashrah senses that her final absolution is near.” Forgive me, but that sounds shady! In the original timeline, the Datusha had a special beef with the vampires. Knowing Nitara is likely in the game, I wonder if we’ll see their rivalry return. Personally, I would love to see them going from enemies to allies. Having Ashrah, Nitara, and Sareena in the same story and influencing each other’s character arcs would be a dream come true! One of the issues with Ashrah’s original story was that it never went beyond her obsession with killing demons, and Mortal Kombat 1 must fix that.
Reptile
While fans were happy to see Reptile come back in human and reptilian form, this shape-shifting created some problems for Syzoth! The main change to his backstory is the fact that his people, the Zaterran, are alive in this timeline. Reptile, however, still cannot find peace because his human form makes him a freak. The “slave” part is curious. Was Reptile turned into a slave because of his shape-shifting ability? He deserves a hug, doesn’t he?
What future will Syzoth create for himself? We’ll have to play Mortal Kombat 1 to find out!
