NetherRealm Studios made fans wait quite a while for the anticipated EVO trailer. And the wait was totally worth it!
This weekend, we had the Evolution Championship Series, better known as EVO. While the main focus of the event is on fighting games tournaments, Mortal Kombat fans were promised a new trailer, so naturally, all eyes were turned in EVO’s direction. To spice things up, Ed Boon teased fans on Twitter with many (pretty direct) references to Reptile.
We didn’t know when the trailer was going to drop. Some people lost sleep, others lost their patience…but at last, here we are with The Banished trailer, bringing not only fan-favourite Reptile but also some highly-requested 3D-era characters. Check it out:
Our first character is, of course, Syzoth, affectionately called Reptile! Fans were wondering: will he have his human form? Will he look like a lizard? NetherRealm Studios found a genius solution: Reptile has both forms!
Good news: Reptile’s people are alive in this New Era. Bad news: his ability to shape-shift into a human form had him cast out. Syzoth, Reptile’s birth name, can seamlessly transition between his human and reptile form during the story and, most impressive, during gameplay!
Ashrah was our second revealed character. Allow me to take this opportunity to record how delighted I am to have her back! I have just recently joined the incredible Kamidogu team, and my first post was an article talking about Ashrah’s past and future. She’s my favourite character in the entire series, so yes, I’m overjoyed! But who is she? Ashrah is a demon from the Netherrealm who, unlike her sisters, fights against her evil, demonic nature. As she states in the trailer, she only looks human because she purged most of the evil within her with the help of the Kriss sword!
Another highly-requested character, Havik joined the roster with some nasty contortionist and outright limb-ripping moves! Although he appears to be the same twisted creature we know and love, his origin has an intriguing change: Havik is a rebel from the Orderrealm instead of a Cleric of Chaos born and bred in the Chaosrealm. What happened to him? Intriguing, for sure!
Last but not least, we saw Sareena as a Kameo character fighting alongside Havik. NetherRealm Studios gave fans another thing they had been asking for: Sareena’s demon form. Her Kameo moveset uses both her human-like and demonic forms to create a visually dynamic and impressive set of assists.
If you ask me, here are my two mains: Ashrah + Sareena!
The Banished keeps Mortal Kombat 1’s exciting trend of giving every character a voice. Reptile, who was often treated as a jobber in recent games, seems to also have an important role in the story. Hurrah!
