Cage Match, the new title in the animated series Mortal Kombat Legends, now has an official cover art and release date!

As you can see in the image above, the cover shows the film’s protagonist, Johnny Cage, in one of his famous superhero star poses! Los Angeles’ tall buildings rise behind him, and amidst some ominous clouds, we see the Mortal Kombat logo!
More interesting, however, are the two other characters accompanying him: Ashrah and Kia.
Ashrah is a demon from the Netherrealm who hunts other demons with a manipulative sword known to her as Kriss. Kia is one of the assassins in Quan Chi’s service, part of the trio composed by Jataaka, Sareena, and Kia herself.
Here’s a recap of the synopsis:
“Neon lights… Suits with shoulder pads… Jumping from explosions in slow motion… In 1980s Hollywood, action star Johnny Cage (Joel McHale) is looking to become an A-list actor. But when his costar, Jennifer (Jennifer Grey), goes missing from set, Johnny finds himself thrust into a world filled with shadows, danger, and deceit. As he embarks on a bloody journey, Johnny quickly discovers the City of Angels has more than a few devils in its midst. He faces off against a sinister secret society plotting a nefarious scheme, but the brutal fight against the bloodthirsty warriors of the Netherrealm is just beginning. Can Johnny, alongside other Kombat legends, save humanity…and, more importantly, his career?”
“A sinister secret society” probably references the Brotherhood of Shadows. Kia is part of the group, while Ashrah left around the time she found the Kriss. In the Original Timeline, that is. If the film follows this backstory, we might see Kia (and Jataaka, who’s also in the cast) hunting down Johnny while Ashrah tries to protect him. Possibilities!
This is the first time Ashrah appears since Mortal Kombat: Armageddon, which is very exciting for fans like me! She’s portrayed by Kelly Hu, who’s going to appear at the San Diego Comic-Con Mortal Kombat 1 panel later today. Could this mean she will reprise the role in the game?!
