The final curtain has fallen as NetherRealm Studios announce that they are moving on from Mortal Kombat 11 after supporting the title for more than two years.
First announced in 2018 at The Game Awards by series co-creator Ed Boon, Mortal Kombat 11 was released in 2019 and has proven to be one of the studio’s most refined and supported titles.
Shipping with a base roster of 25 kombatants, a further 12 were later added across a number of releases (Shang Tsung, Nightwolf, Sindel, The Joker, Spawn, The Terminator, Fujin, RoboCop, Sheeva, Rambo, Rain and Mileena). Despite the challenges imposed by the global pandemic, the studio also managed to push out an hours-long expansion to the title’s incredible Story Mode, along with additional arenas and the return of Friendships as part of the Aftermath DLC in 2020.
Late last year Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate was released, which saw the culmination of all previously released downloadable content. In addition, Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate was also upgraded for PlayStation 5 and Xbox One S/X with significantly improved visuals and load times. NetherRealm Studios also allowed those who had purchased the original game to upgrade to the next-gen version at no additional cost.
While we are sad to see support for Mortal Kombat 11 officially end, we are incredibly proud of the work NetherRealm Studios put into the title and would like to take a moment to congratulate them on their massive achievement.
So what’s next for the studio? Will we see Injustice 3 or Mortal Kombat 12? Or perhaps a remaster of some sort, or an entirely new franchise? Only time will tell…
