With only twelve days remaining until the release of Mortal Kombat X, NetherRealm Studios held the eighth episode of their popular Kombat Kast this morning.
Subtitled “Anytime, Anywhere,” the stream focused on the mobile port of Mortal Kombat X, as well as returning kombatants Kenshi and Sonya Blade. It also marked the first time the “final” character select screen was shown, minus Jason Voorhees, Tanya, Tremor and Predator (who are available as part of the Kombat Pack) and any hidden kombatants that may be present.
In opening the stream, producers Erin Piepergerdes and Ray McCaffrey joined regular hosts Tyler Lansdown and Derek Kirtzic to discuss the iOS and Android companion app for Mortal Kombat X. Available sometime in April, the app is a free-to-play card battler that features 3-on-3 tag team match-ups not dissimilar to that of Injustice: Gods Among Us. Aside from offering a mobile experience, players will have the opportunity unlock additional content that will appear in their console version at home.
Furthermore, players who connect their console and mobile versions of Mortal Kombat X via WBPlay will unlock both “Ninja Mime” Johnny Cage and “Farmer” Jax skins in addition to even more content on day one.
Next up the team showed off Kenshi, who made his series debut in Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance. His three variations include Balanced (which allows him to use projected images of himself to attack), Possessed (which gives him the ability to summon demons from his shattered blade) and Kenjutsu (which allows him to use Telekinetic Push, Slam and Toss).
Kenshi begins his Fatality by levitating his sword, after which he causes it to spin ferociously in a clockwise direction. He then telepathically lifts his opponent, before pulling them through the blade horizontally. Ouch.
U.S. Special Forces agent Sonya Blade was shown off next, sporting a sophisticated and mature new look. Her three variations include Covert Ops (in which she gains the Garrote Parry and Military Stance), Demolition (which allows her to use various Explosive and Disruptor grenades) and Special Forces (which allows her to call in a Special Forces drone for additional attacks). Her Fatality was not demonstrated.
Mortal Kombat X will be available for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC when it launches on April 14, 2015. In addition, it will be available for both iOS and Android devices in April.
